Rare red 'danger to life' warning for part of UK as Storm Goretti approaches
A Red warning for wind has been issued for the Isles of Scilly and much of Cornwall, with Storm Goretti forecast to bring gusts of 100mph or more. An Amber warning for snow is also in force for Wales, the Midlands and parts of northern England.
Temperatures are falling rapidly, and the cold snap is set to continue into the weekend as Storm Goretti moves in, bringing severe winds and blizzard conditions to parts of England, Wales and Scotland. Multiple weather warnings are in force, including a red alert and two amber alerts, with heavy snowfall expected for many areas in the hours ahead.
A deep area of low pressure moving across southern parts of the UK will bring a significant “multi-hazard” weather event through the rest of Thursday and into Friday. The wind warning for the Isles of Scilly and much of Cornwall has been upgraded to Red as confidence increases in exceptionally strong winds capable of causing major impacts. Winds are expected to strengthen rapidly on Thursday evening, with the most severe conditions lasting for two to three hours before easing.
Several Yellow warnings for wind, snow and rain have also been issued across large parts of England, Scotland and Wales. The strongest winds are expected in west Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, where exposed coastal locations could see gusts reaching 100mph. Very large waves will create dangerous coastal conditions. These winds could exceed those seen during recent notable storms, including Storm Ciaran in 2023 and Storm Eunice in 2022. Elsewhere, gusts of 50–60mph are likely across southwest Wales and parts of southern England, particularly along exposed coasts and hills.
Alongside the wind, Storm Goretti will bring snow, with the heaviest falls most likely across Wales and parts of the Midlands, where an Amber warning is in place. Rain will also pose a hazard, particularly across southwest Wales and eastern England. 10–15cm are expected widely, with 20–30cm possible in some areas, especially over higher ground. The greatest risk of disruption is expected from Thursday night into Friday morning and the amber cold weather health alerts will remain in place for all regions of England until 12 January.
With Storm Goretti on the way, Caledonia Signs would like to highlight how quickly stormy, wintery conditions can impact your safety, comfort, and peace of mind. We’re committed to helping everyone prepare for the additional risks and hazards that storms inevitably bring. Whether you’re travelling to/for work, maintaining your workplace, or simply trying to stay warm and visible, a little preparation can make all the difference.
In outdoor spaces, environmental hazards like thin ice on ponds or strong gusts of wind can pose serious risks. Safety signs act as early warnings, encouraging caution in areas where natural conditions might otherwise go unnoticed. Clear, well-placed signage prevents accidents before they occur, particularly in public parks, recreational areas, and school grounds.
With all the chaos Storm Goretti may bring, please take care, avoid risks, and stay safe.
