National No Smoking Day 2025

No Smoking Day is taking place on Wednesday 12 March 2025 and we're asking for everyone to show their support. It's the perfect time of year for smokers who have been thinking about quitting to kickstart their journey.

Whether you’re a smoker aiming to quit, or someone looking to support others, there are many ways to get involved in No Smoking Day:

Commit to Quit: If you smoke, use this day as your starting point to quit and seek out support.
Spread Awareness: Share information about the dangers of smoking and the benefits of quitting.
Host or Attend Events: Participate in community workshops, seminars, or support groups. Highlight the campaign in your workplace in order to encourage and support employees to quit for good - No smoking signs can also help.
Social Media: Share personal stories, offer words of encouragement, and use the official hashtags: #NoSmokingDay2025, #QuitForGood, #SmokeFreeLife, #BreatheEasy, #HealthFirst.
Offer Support: Encourage and stand by someone you know who’s trying to quit. Support from friends, family and colleagues can make all the difference when breaking a difficult habit.

As someone who has struggled with smoking for most of my life, I can say, with all honesty, that quitting is an incredibly tough battle. And whilst I haven’t fully dropped the habit yet, (I’m still holding onto my vape like it’s a lifeline -something that genuinely scares me), I've often told myself, “I’ll quit sometime in the future,” but that future always seems to evade me.

When the smoking ban was enforced in 2006, it made it easier for me to cut back. I could no longer light up anywhere, whenever I wanted (rightly so). Suddenly, my nicotine intake dropped dramatically. The restrictions on smoking in workplaces, bars, and restaurants also brought the smell back into focus. I had gone "nose blind" to it before, but once I was reminded, the odour alone was enough to put me off.

Despite all that progress, my resolve crumbled when I started university. Stress took over, and out of nowhere, a cigarette “magically” appeared in my hand. (I’m sure a friend provided it, but it felt like the devil had handed it to me.) With one simple inhale, all my determination vanished. It was incredibly frustrating.

Fast forward to today, and we find ourselves in a world where smoking no longer smells like it used to. Vapes—loaded with highly addictive 20mg nicotine can be found littered everywhere. They’re as common as sprinkles on an ice cream cone. Kids are sharing vapes in schools and on the streets, not realising that a single 20mg/ml vape (which contains 40mg of nicotine) is equivalent to smoking 30-40 cigarettes. And with vapes being so discreet and portable, it’s terrifying how easily someone can sneak a draw, even on a plane.

So, I’ve decided that Wednesday, 12 March 2025, will be my turning point. It’s not just about quitting for my health, but for the health of future generations and the planet we all share.

I hope that, by sharing my story, others will also find the strength to take their first step toward quitting. Together, we can beat this addiction and create a healthier world for everyone.
